"I don't like that the cart does not allow me to duplicate an existing product and then make minor changes to create a new product. This really slows me down when entering products. They charge extra for everything ($700 to make the cart mobile friendly, in this century?!). When I cancelled, they would not give me a refund, even though I cancelled just 2 weeks into the 30 day trial period. No explanation, just "No refund is due". I read others have had this same complaint with them. That's more than just a little red flag. I found their support responses to be sluggish and not very helpful. There are much better products. "

"This was the easiest experience and quickest getting a new commerce site started and usable by a customer that I have ever experienced. The admin side of this cart is great too. I've been building shopping sites since 1994. I've tried volusion, oscommerce, magento and others and all ic an say is my next ones will be built in Miva Merchant. The user support forums are great and active. Most of my questions were already answered in those forums. A simple search and wa-la. Also the free support is pretty rockin. Yes it took about 24 hours to answer, but it was FREE! Wish all carts were made this well. The only errors I really experienced were one I made myself. This is highly customizable and it was my own html code problems which were the problem, Not the cart. You can use it out of the bag with one of their templates. or you can dig in make it your own (of course that is what I did). And when I did an update, it didn't freak out the store, like the other carts I mentioned did with a customized front end. Yep, I'm a happy happy customer."

"Granted that I do not have any experience with other shopping carts. My company has been using MivaMerchant for about 10 years. Many modules have been purchased and some custom programming done. All is working fine. There are things that I would like to have work better, but overall it is fine. However, when Hostasaurus was purchased by Miva, things started to go downhill. Now the prices have gone up and the support has gone down. I am looking for a new shopping cart and a new host. If you use Miva, I would at least have it hosted by a different company. And, FYI, $49 for the purchase price? No. There is a monthly charge of somewhere around this price to "rent" the software and host the site plus an additional yearly fee."

"The cart platform has a lot of customization options. The customer service aspect of Miva Merchant is not customer focused. They do not listen to customer requests and/or problems. I have been a customer for 2+ years with multiple websites. Unfortunately, one of the most important aspects of a cart is customer service. Look elsewhere!"

"Miva Merchant is a great company for me and my company’s needs! Tech support and Sales have been there 100% for us, AND they follow up to see how we're doing and if we need additional help. They've gone above and beyond the call of duty to help me get my site launched. Every good company knows that recognizing the need for improvement promotes awareness throughout an organization, and following through with needed improvements leads to a progress and company growth. Keep doing what you're doing! I'm planning on staying and growing with you. Thanks Miva!"

"Miva has a very versatile shopping cart. Unfortunately, they have purchased hostasaurus, a miva webhost which used to be awesome, but have turned hostasaurus into a nightmare. I keep hearing from Miva (after long telephone waits and emails to Rick Wilson) that they will fix all the problems they created, but after a year, there are still more problems than fixes. The shopping cart is great, but don't host with hostasaurus."

"I am a designer and rely heavily on HTML and CSS. Miva Merchant makes it easy to incorporate my skills and there into a fully functional high end eCommerce site with all the bells and whistles. Every issue I've had was addressed immediately and efficiently whether it be by phone or through their support ticket system. I've been using Miva Merchant since 2000 and have found it to be a solid product with minimal issues. "

"Sorry Stan (see previous review) but tired and outdated, NOT! I've been using Miva for some 10 years now. It's superior to any of the others I've tried, from Volusion to Joomla to Magento to PrestaShop... you name it. I constantly check around to see what else is happening with carts, because I'm keen to keep up to date; and MIVA 5.5 comes out on top every time. Easy to use, clean access to css and html, amazing support (they really have ramped up their support over the last year or so)- and it has all the bells and whistles if you want 'em. It's constantly evolving (how can anyone say "it's old"??- it's WISE!!)AND -- a real biggie-- updates are really usually a click of a button, unlike other carts which become an absolute nightmare if you've changed anything. Go Miva- you rock!"

"We have been working with Miva Merchant for several years now and let me be one of several to say it is absolutely a fantastic shopping cart. We have worked with a lot of other shopping carts and Miva Merchant by far as the most control out of the box. The best feature I like is their template system. It gives you more control than any other cart I have used. In addition, I can quickly extend the stores functionality with the vast offering of modules."

"I've used Miva Merchant for years. The templating system is powerful, the features are full-fledged. The open API lets programmers add custom functionality as needed. Modules are available, but there are only two that are really needed for most stores: a coupon module (there are several options) and Toolkit, which adds a lot of neat features but most importantly gives developers access to the few functions that the built-in templating is missing. On-page SEO is easy with Miva, because you can customize the templates, rewrite the URLs, maintain meta tags, and it now has a CSS-based framework for cleaner code. Yes, there is a learning curve, so if you don't know much about running a website it will be hard. This is not a plug-and-play cart like some hosted carts are, but they don't have the flexibility that Miva Merchant has. If you're particular about features, code, and ultimate control over the site itself, you need to know how to operate the software or you should consider hiring out that task. The forums are closely monitored by an active base of users as well as company staff, so it's usually easy to get an answer if you need a question. Bugs are resolved through streaming updates and are fixed in a timely manner. New features are well-tested through a group of beta users which contains both developers and end users. Bottom line - if you are looking for a powerful cart, Miva Merchant is a great choice."

"While Miva Merchant staff experienced some growing pains the past year, they've hired more to address support issues. As an ecommerce consultant/developer, I find the cart itself to be amongst the best. It's uber-flexible and third-party development allows for nearly any feature desired to be "plugged in". While the cart may be overkill for those needing only the simplest of solutions, those wanting the ability to "grow with the times" will find it's an ideal solution for both adding new features (following trends) and exporting data for integration with supporting systems."

If you haven't checked out the latest version of Miva Merchant you really need to see what you are missing!"

"I've been using Miva Merchant for a decade now. The current version is superb. Every page template in the store can be customized by the store owner to give their store a different look and feel from others using Miva Merchant. The in-house support is excellent. Rarely do I have an issue, but the last time I had a server issue (I'm hosted at their servers), they fixed the problem in less than five minutes. The community forum is top notch. Simple questions and/or custom solutions are often answered on the same day by a variety of experienced users and developers who freely share their knowledge. The available 3rd party plug-in modules cover a variety of functions that satisfy the needs of just about any store. Typically a store will buy 3 or 4 inexpensive modules ($50 each - often less). Most stores do not buy the Miva Merchant core product outright. Rather they lease it as part of their hosting agreement/fees, so the financial outlay is typically $10 per month for the main cart (depending on the host). The successful annual conference they host is testament to the dedication and long term commitment they have in producing a top notch shopping cart. "

"I may be a tad biased, but what would you expect from someone who has worked with a piece of software for over 10 years. Miva Merchant is the ONLY cart system we use because its at least one of, if not the best, in its class. Doing our due diligence, we frequently review other carts (which lead us here) only to return with the same result: Miva Merchant. Why, well in a nutshell its because while both being easy to use and setup, its also extremely flexible. Other systems might be flexible as well, but once you make a modification, upgrades become tortuous affairs. When you have 30 to 40 ongoing clients, you can imagine what a burden it would be to have to make a manual modification on all 30 because of new requirements. With its modular architecture, you can create any modification you want, and then MAYBE, on the rare occasions, make a tweak or two to your module. (Oh, I don't know where they get the price of $995 from, has its generally included in a high quality hosting package for about $49.00/mo--and I mean high quality...I don't care what cart you use, if you think you can run a business on a 10/20 month site...I've got some good quality bridges to sell you.)"

"My entire Miva website experience actually brought me to tears it was so bad. And I'm a strong person. Nothing went as planned and I kept getting charged more and more money. I bet I had to send over 100 emails to try to get things straightened out. I would send a question to "free" tech support and they would send it to the Design Team that would charge me without my consent. Just terrible...."

"Miva used to be a decent cart but their support has really gone down the toilet this past year. Frequently I wait one, two, three weeks for issues to be resolved even if marked urgent. I'm terrified to run an automated update because if something goes wrong I'll be down for who-know-how-long. Even if I go through my host (who is supposedly a "premier partner") it takes forever to get anything fixed these days. Maybe Miva's staff are overwhelmed since the recent merge with Hostasaurus? Maybe they're giving those customers special treatment and getting to their other customers (and premier partner hosts) when they can? Who knows. I've talked to other hosts and users and they're upset as well. The other reviews here are right - Miva is terrible now. Find another cart."

"Run! The worst in tech support unless you pay for it. I tried to upgrade to V 5 but it was even worse! Seems that deliberate "bugs" are purposely written into the software so they have a reason to charge you for the updates and bug fixes. Will be changing to Volusion very soon. All of the functionality that you would have to spend literally hundreds of $ for with miva is already included , and they actually don't act like you are a bother to them if you have a question. Miva is lousy at best and now they have recently merged with hostasaurus and have already lowered their standards of customer service excellence. Very Sad."

"I cannot imagine that there can possibly be a more inferior product than Miva. The cart is so "brittle" that any time something new (and minor at that) is done to the site, a failure of another occurs. And Miva support is basically non-existant. No response to emails, or when the do respond, it is days later, even for critical/high priority cases. Awful."

"I have over 10 stores using MIVA. I will be changing all of them. In addition to horrible documentation, and almost $1000 extra for modules PER STORE just to make the cart function with today's SEO needs, MIVA sold me 3 modules for $860, they didn't work as promised, MIVA didn't support them, and then MIVA refused to refund me. They were content, literally, to steal from a big client. I'm launching 5 more stores this year, not one will be with MIVA. They'll lose 15 licensed users over these issues. Kinda makes you go, huh."

Ecommerce Spot Comments This is one of the most popular carts on the market. It has a wide range of features and has a lot of 3rd party extras available. It has an excellent user community such as this developers group. The management changed in 2007 and significant changes have been made to the product since then since Miva version 4.
